Server Administrator

Duties primarily involve the installation and maintenance of web and intranet servers and associated applications. This includes supporting users and troubleshooting when problems are discovered with applications on those servers.

System Administrators must be able to:

  • Install and maintain POSIX servers (primarily Linux).
  • Understand the maintenance of associate applications (eg. Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL & POSIX). You must be able to configure and compile these applications.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of server security issues and web relevant protocols.
  • Program confidently using more than one language (eg PERL or Bash scripting).
  • Demonstrate skills for proactively identifying and resolving potential problems.

The ideal System Administrator is someone who:

  • Can support a wide range of servers (i.e. Windows, Mac).
  • Is so passionate about server administration that they run a small server farm at home.
  • Has experience in similar roles.
  • Has a good phone manner.
  • Has strong PHP programming and debugging skills.
  • Enjoys occasional travel (This role requires on-site support for clients from time-to-time and Squiz has clients all over Australia and has an office in Wellington and in London).
