Squiz caught up with Bartek this week. Check out his thoughts on Matrix, music and Polish Apple Pancakes.
Squiz: In which office are you based Bart?
How long have you worked at Squiz?
Next month will mark my 8th year.
What does a Product Manager do?
What don't they do! My main responsibility is to look after our flagship product and CMS – Squiz Matrix. I need to do whatever is necessary to make sure it heads in the right direction from a feature roadmap perspective whilst making sure all of its users get the support they need. Managing bugs & feature requests and assigning tasks to the development team is a daily thing, but I also often work with other parts of the business such as Production, Support, Marketing, Sales and Training.
What has helped you get where you are today?
I'd say the people at Squiz themselves. I wouldn't have stayed on for 8 years if it wasn't for the people I worked with, I've learned such an incredible lot from them. Working with Squiz Matrix every day and being extremely passionate about the product always helps too.
What sets Squiz apart from other organisations?
I think the opportunity to grow and change positions all whilst staying at the same company is a core strength of Squiz and is very rare in companies these days. Expanding your skill set and advancing your career is something that's greatly encouraged here. There's also no feeling of organisational hierarchy, everyone just seems to be a great big team trying to achieve the same goals.
Have you had a favourite day at Squiz?
There's too many favourites to choose from, but one of the top days was the release of Squiz Matrix 5. It was my first big release as a Product Manager and marked the beginning of a new direction and era for the product.
What are the most rewarding aspects of your role?
Seeing what others create and achieve and with Matrix, especially when they use new features and tools you've helped bring in to the product. Improving and growing a piece of software that is used by thousands of people every day all around the world, and knowing that each new version you release helps improve those users daily work life, is extremely rewarding.
What’s some of the best advice you’ve ever received?
Don't let the small problems annoy you and stand in the way of reaching the big goals.
Tell us something interesting about you.
My parents are originally from Poland and moved to Sweden where me and my siblings were born and grew up. We moved to Australia about 15 years ago so I guess I'm a "Polishwedestralian"?
What are you listening to right now?
The ABC song, as sung by my 3 year old daughter Indigo... the perks of working from home.
If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?
I would love to master Music Production. I used to DJ quite a lot back in the day and I always wanted to create my own music but never really got the full hang of it.
What is your favourite movie?
Hard to pick one as the best, but a movie that I've seen about a hundred times and could easily watch a hundred more is Die Hard 3: With a Vengence.
What is the one, single food that you would never give up?
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
The power to give anyone a superpower.
