Squiz Q&A with Digital Marketing Specialist, Kacper Skoczylas

Our social guru Kacper Skoczylas talks passionately about marketing, his love of social media, his highly variable working week, and his daily life in Squiz’s Szczecin office.

Squiz: In which office are you based, Kacper?

Skoczylas: Szczecin, Poland

How long have you been at Squiz?

It’s a great time to answer this question, since next week will be my one-year anniversary with Squiz Poland. I can confirm that my decision to join Squiz was one of the best of my career. The place is full of smart people who really enjoy their jobs, want to build their knowledge, and have a shared vision about our mission and goals – to change the digital world into a better place.

Did you attend university?

I graduated with a management degree from the University of Szczecin. Once I knew I wanted to focus my career on digital marketing, I completed postgraduate study in digital marketing from WSB Universities in Poznań, Poland.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always been interested in marketing, technology, and, more recently, digital trends. So I consider myself very fortunate to be at Squiz doing what I love. It’s a great place to develop and expand your knowledge, while helping businesses all around the world grow.

Describe your average day at Squiz?

In marketing, it’s rare to have two similar days in one week (or even one month). I usually start my day by grabbing a coffee (who doesn't?) and reading my e-mails to see what’s happened overnight with my global colleagues. At the same time, I’m looking at my calendar to plan any meetings throughout my day. In Poland, we now have two people in the marketing team, so it’s great to share ideas, ask questions, and catch up on different conversations we’ve had with the global team. I also work very closely with our new business-development team. I help them understand our customers’ needs and assist with all lead-generation activities. A key part of my role is the creation and management of all local marketing campaigns, landing pages, case studies, and social media engagements, so I need to ensure that I’m up-to-date with our global activities.

What do you like about working at Squiz?

It’s definitely the passionate people, the culture, and our approach to customer engagement. I believe there's nothing more important than creating teams with great personalities and complementary attitudes, especially when we spend so much of our time on problem-solving.

What tech development are you excited about right now?

As a marketer and 'social beast’, I get quite excited about everything connected to modern ways of communicating. I make a concerted effort to be current on everything relating to social media (yes, even Pokemon Go), including artificial reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and new ways of engaging our customers and helping to drive lead generation. I’m also the founder of the biggest 'meet-up' in Szczecin for digital marketing and social media: Social Media Thursdays; it’s been running for almost four years now.

How do you manage your work-life balance?

I have a great fiancée who totally understands that marketers rarely ever work your typical 9-to-5 day, especially when most of the team members are based in offices across the world. I’m also the proud owner of an awesome Jack Russell Terrier named Tetris, who helps with my work-life balance with long walks and other dog-trekking activities. I’m a big fan of computer games and travel, too. (My fiancée definitely prefers the latter.)

What's been the highlight of your career to date?

During my first year at Squiz, I achieved a lot in Szczecin. I can see that the whole team is taking advantage of my activities, and our results are now becoming visible. Also, one of my biggest highlights is that our global marketing director wants me to help the global team with the evolution of our global social media strategy – so watch this space!

What’s something that none of your colleagues knows about you?

Since January, I have spent more than $200 for character skins in the Heroes of the Storm computer game!

What’s your favourite book?

Metro 2033 is an awesome novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky about the world after a nuclear war. I highly recommend it if you like that sort of thing.

What’s your favourite movie?

Scarface, the Al Pacino classic.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever heard?

"If you are the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room."
