This week, we caught up with Łukasz Sipa, one of our Senior Account Managers in Szczecin, Poland.
Squiz: In which office are you based?
Sipa: Szczecin, Poland.
How long have you been part of the Squiz’ family?
I’ve been part of Squiz for 2.5 years now. Wow, time flies, huh?!
Which path led you to Squiz?
My general interest in IT technologies.
What's helped you to get here?Online games… er, what? I wouldn’t have come to Szczecin if it wasn’t for online games. My two best friends - that I’ve first met online - brought me here, to Szczecin.
I created games/anime-related websites when I was a teenager and I’ve been fascinated by IT technologies ever since. That helped me find my way into IT companies in London, then Szczecin.
What does your typical day look like?
Each day seems different, which is why I never get bored. I’ve got quite a long list of clients that I keep up with and they’re mostly based in Warsaw. It means that I travel 1,200 km for 2 hours meeting - that’s like a million miles if you use imperial units :O (pun intended). This may happen a few times a week.
Apart from travelling, I work closely with pretty much all of the departments in Squiz, starting from Sales, through Technical Consultants, UX, Production, Project Management, Q&A, Support and even… Sys Admins. Everyone is responsible for our client’s joy and will of working with Squiz. We put emphasis on that from the words: Marketing Qualified Lead! What goes around, comes around. Other than that, I make loads of business phone calls - it’s always about the money at the end of the day!
Is there any advice that you’d give anyone who wanted to follow a similar path?
I love being technical as I love the technology. But, let’s try to make a perfect Account Manager by following these simple wine-making* steps:
- Let’s start off with a bit of ‘outgoing personality’
- It needs something… ‘adaptable’
- I think a sour note is in order. Add a little “don’t say ‘yes’ to everything”
- You need to add a bit of water, or you’ll back up the taps.Then put some ‘creativity’ in there
- Nearly there, one ‘thinking out of the box’ and ‘communications skills’ please.
- Well… the juice needs a little massaging - step in the vat and jump to squish the mixture around!
- You’re a natural! Enjoy a brand new Account Manager!
What’s your favourite part of your job?Having all these brainstorming meetings with crazy Squizzers. Other than that, hearing ‘it’s a deal’ during a phone call with a client makes my heart beat!
What was your dream job when you were a kid?
It was all about the sports when I was a kid. Basketball, long jump, parkour, dancing etc.
Who inspires you now?
Blizzard (games company) - that’s the best example of Customer Experience, Customer Lifecycle Management, Customer Support and Personalisation. If you ever wonder how to make your client’s happy and make them pay you lots of money, have a look at them.
What do you do to keep your work-life balance?
It’s all about little wins. I try to make as many of them as possible, everyday. Well, getting up on time is one of them and since then it just goes on… easily! I love winning, therefore having a meeting with some friends is a win, going out to cinema is a win too, winning a Formula 1 race on PS4 is… a win, I guess?
What’s something no one knows about yourself?
It might be a big surprise to Squiz UK colleagues - I hate vodka!
What’s new and exciting right now in the world of IT?
Oh, so many different things. One thing that’s going to rock the world is the start of general availability of .BLOG domain names on 21st of November 2016. Imagine all those digital companies registering .BLOG domain names and what it could mean for digital transformation companies like ours :)
Finally, why Squiz?It’s a very competitive environment. I do a bit of AM and BDM work, so I’m in love with numbers too. My target is what’s keeping me at the top of my game all year round - I like that mixture.
