This week, we caught up with John McCormick, one of Squiz’s Web Developers in our Edinburgh office, UK.
Squiz: How long have been working for Squiz?
McCormick: I've been a Squizzer for over 6 years now!
What does your typical day look like?
I spend most of my time liaising and working with the wider Squiz team on our Scottish clients' projects. I spend quite a chunk of my time in Matrix and writing front-end code, but will occasionally attend a client meetings or be in-house with the client, collaborating on a project. There's lots of cups of tea involved and I struggle without my morning Belvita!
What’s your favourite part about working at Squiz?
The people and culture are brilliant. There's so many personalities and everyone is friendly and willing to help you out. I like that Squiz is a global company, too - my Squiz roots actually started on the other side of the world in New Zealand.
What has been your proudest achievement at Squiz?
The toughest question! I'm quite proud of the delivery of a project I was involved in in NZ. It was perhaps the first truly agile project our office took on board and involved the client, another digital agency, and tight timeframes. There was great teamwork and collaboration between all parties, and unique features which made it satisfying to implement. We delivered it on time and the client threw a small launch party to celebrate.
What do you enjoy about this industry?
I like the creativity and constantly changing dynamics of it. There's always new things to experiment with and learn so it never gets dull. We get the opportunity to build amazing interactive experiences that reach many others.
Who inspires you?
I'm inspired by creative individuals that are passionate and energised about what they do, or have worked hard to achieve something great.
What are your five songs that give rhythm to your day?
A really tough one. Here's a few taken from over the years:
- Alice in Chains - Nutshell
- Peace Orchestra - Who Am I
- Deadmau5 - October
- Major Lazer - Get Free
- FKA twigs - Two Weeks
What was your dream job when you were young?
I wanted to be a doctor when I was quite young. Later on, I wanted to be a video game designer. I still have some maps of 2D platform adventure style games that I drew up! Haha!
What one thing do you wish you had (skill, thing or other)?
A working version of Griff's 'Pitbull' hoverboard from Back to the Future II would be awesome, please - arigatou!
Wine or beer?
If I'm not drinking bourbon and coke, I'll pick up a beer - preferably a craft IPA.
Footy, Cricket, Rugby Union or other?
Sports? I enjoy watching snooker, but video games are my main hobby.
Finally, why Squiz?
I was attracted to Squiz initially because of the industry. After meeting the staff I realised that the people and culture make Squiz a really appealing place to stay - you become part of the Squiz family.
John will be tweeting his week at work at @lifeatsquiz from 19 September to 24 September. Follow along to see what he gets up to on a daily basis in Edinburgh!
