Squiz Q&A with Digital and Usability Analyst , Bronwyn Beagle

This week, we caught up with Bronwyn Beagle, one of Squiz New Zealand’s Digital and Usability Analysts.

Squiz: In which office are you based Bronwyn?

Beagle: Wellington.

How long have you had the pleasure of working for Squiz?

Just over 6 months.

What was your path here?

I have had a varied path. I started off as developer for Trade Me, but I spent a lot of time creating and running optimisation experiments so I changed career paths a little and took a job as a User Researcher at PikPok (a Wellington based mobile games company). From there I headed back into the web scene as a Project Manager / Web Analyst at Springload and then in to a more focused role Analyst role here at Squiz.

What do you get up to on an average day?

On an average day I would spend some time looking over some of our client’s analytics and preparing frequent reports. I might implement analytic tracking on current projects or perform usability tests with Liv Henrich here in Wellington.

What do you love about your role?

I get to look at and understand how users interact with our client’s businesses. On a large scale via analytics and in person performing usability tests. Each person thinks differently and I find it fascinating how different users have different experiences with the same site.

What's helped you to get to where you are now?

My love of learning and a bit of luck. I love learning and if someone says “I wonder if we can do this…” My ears perk up and I think “I’m sure I could” and then I make it happen. The opportunity such as the User Researcher role popping up at the right moment was just pure luck.

Is there any advice that you’d give anyone who wanted to do something similar?

Watch people using websites, and start noticing the ways they use the site. Is it different to you? Are they comfortable or are they just trying things because they are struggling to find or do what they want? Get creative and curious. How can you make their experience with that site better? Then come talk to me about your ideas ;)

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a Zoologist.

What one thing do you wish you had (skill, thing or other)?

I would really like to own a puzzle/escape room business. I dream and make puzzle room experiences in my head and check out all the different escape rooms every time I go on holiday with my husband.

When you’re not being a full time Squizzer, where do you most like to be?

I am also a Personal Trainer at my local gym so if I am not either working out or working someone else out I am spending time with family & friends playing board games or having a LAN.

Cats or dogs?

Either as long as they are happy and energetic.

Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders, Highlanders or Hurricanes (or couldn’t care less)?

Coffee or tea?

If it is in a warm mug, I don’t care. So long as my hands are snuggly.

Summer or winter?

100% Summer. If I was rich, I would chase Summer and work around the world living at a constant 27 C

Wine or beer?

Wine, Champagne on a good day, Red on a sad day.

Town or country?

Defiantly town. I would miss technology and the hustle of a city. However, in NZ living in the far suburbs can sometimes feel like the country. 5-minute drive will see me at a horse stables with sheep and goats too!

Finally, why Squiz?

The people at Squiz are so nice and funny. It is such a flexible, great working environment and the type of clientele we generally work with do something for the people of New Zealand, so it is great to work with them for the betterment of everyone.

Bronwyn will be tweeting her week at work at @lifeatsquiz from 26-30 September - follow along to see what she gets up to during the week.
