Squiz Q&A with Systems Support Engineer, Dan Graver

Dan Graver waxes lyrical about his CRU team, his musical pursuits, a certain London Christmas party, and his work life in Squiz’s Hobart office.

Squiz: In which office are you based, Dan?

Graver: Hobart, Tasmania

Whereabouts did you grow up?

Kingston, Tasmania.

Which university did you attend?

University of Queensland.

How long have you been at Squiz?

It will be three years in October.

What does the CRU team do?

We fix things! Well, we do a lot more than just that, but on a day-to-day basis, you’ll find the team addressing issues, upgrading systems, enhancing processes, and working hard to keep the lights on! Our job is to make everything work seamlessly.

What does your typical day look like?

As we are at the coalface of any customer technical-support query, we talk to customers throughout the day. And, because we’re a global operation, we’re doing a lot of work to support our systems and teams globally, to ensure a consistent approach to our support and systems.

What do you like to do outside work?

I have been playing musical instruments for more than 20 years now and used to be in four bands. Now I’m just focusing on one band, Doyle & Gravy, a blues duo. I play bass, drums, and guitar, depending on what the band needs.

What's been you're most interesting gig?

One of the most memorable has to be the time when I filled in for a country rock band that was supporting the Wolfe Brothers! I was performing in front of 2,000 people ... and I loved it!

How do you commute to work?

I live just a 15-minute walk from the Squiz office in Hobart. Not a bad commute at all!

What were the last five songs you listened to on your walk to work?

Do you visit other any of the other Squiz offices?

I’ve been to our Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane offices in Australia. Because we support every region, travelling to the different offices is a key part of CRU and my role; it's important to know the region, our customers, and our staff. I also spent six months in the Squiz London office last year. I’ll be back working in the London office in August, which I’m very much looking forward to.

What was the best part of working in London?

Easy. It's the opportunity to make large, positive changes for our customers and their environments, and to help ensure we have consistent and global support. In addition, coming from Australia, I also love the proximity to the rest of Europe (ask any Aussie); it's unbeatable. During my last visit to London, the first time I had downtime, I hopped a plane and visited Iceland. It was such an amazing experience and a really great country. If you've ever thought of going, do it!

What's it like in the Hobart office?

In a word, great! It’s all about teamwork. We're a close-knit group; we all work well together – and in close proximity. We work hard, but we have fun and socialise together, too.

What's been your favourite day at Squiz?

To be honest, there have been so many memorable days so far. However, a stand-out would have to be the Christmas Party in the London office. It started at about 2pm on a Friday afternoon, and it basically didn't end! The office was completely decked out in a Vegas-style casino theme, and everyone was dressed up to suit the occasion. They looked amazing! Then, at 10pm, our exclusive food truck arrived. It was awesome.

What motivates you?

When you do good work, you can change things, and we're all empowered to do so. If the process is not optimal, we can improve it. If it's not right, we can make it right. We don't just sit and work here from 9 to 5 – that’s not the type of folks we are. We live and breathe what we do, we're passionate, and we care a great deal. We get to constantly optimise our own environment and get a buzz out of the continuous improvements!

Dan also plays a starring role in our Careers@Squiz video. He’ll be tweeting his week at work at @lifeatsquiz from 25 July to 29 July. Follow along to see what he gets up to on a daily basis.
