The Challenge

When they came to us, City University's marketing team had been running their website on a legacy CMS that made it incredibly difficult for them to make even the simplest changes to their website content and layout. They were frustrated with the lack of control and flexibility and were looking for a CMS that would empower them to truly own their site.

City's UX and design agency was already busily working on researching the user experience and designing the creative concepts for the site, so Squiz was engaged as a technology partner for the project. With our extensive experience in building university websites in our Matrix CMS, and our capabilities in integrating with internal and external systems, we were a perfect fit for the job.

The Solution

Technology + services = solutions

One of the key reasons that City chose to work with us was our background in professional services such as technical advice, planning and training. It was crucial to the team to work with a partner that could provide ongoing guidance and outline best practices in areas such as workflow and configuration. To make sure that the City team were completely confident in their implementation of Matrix, we held a series of workshops to lead them through the best ways to configure and build a Matrix site. We were also on hand throughout the process to help with any questions or issues that arose.

Teach a team to fish

While we know our software like the back of our hands (or keyboards?) and could develop the site ourselves and walk away, this project took a different turn. The university had a highly qualified web development team who were keen to learn how to implement a site in Matrix for themselves. We shared our best practice techniques for both back-end and front-end development and trained the team so that they could build the entire site from the ground up. This gave them flexibility and control that they'd never previously experienced.

Integration with ease

Like most universities these days, the City team had a lot of different systems and portals that they needed to connect with. With lots of back-end databases and e-learning platforms, it was going to be hard to develop a clean interface that could display all that information seamlessly for the user. Luckily, Matrix just loves integrating with other systems, and we've had our fair share of experience in getting all sorts of software to talk to one another. We developed a framework that allowed City to integrate all of its systems in a cinch.

The Result

Empowered editors

Content editors who had previously bemoaned their inability to make the smallest of changes are now jumping for joy due to the functionality of Matrix's Easy Edit Suite. Authors and editors can jump straight into a page and amend content, or just create entirely new pages with ease.

Round of applause

The new website was received warmly by both staff and students, with positive feedback flowing in after its launch. While we're pleased that the end-users like it, we're even more pleased that the City team is feeling more confident than ever before about their online presence.
