Where does your institution rank for AI search visibility?

In Squiz's analysis of 169 Christian colleges and universities, we found that AI visibility has almost nothing to do with size, endowment, or name recognition. Any institution can pull ahead by applying Content Health principles to its web content.

Five signals AI looks for

One

Consistency

Same program names, costs, and terminology across every page. When your tuition, program length, or denomination says two different things, the model hedges or skips you.

Two

Specificity

Named programs, denominational identity, outcomes, and scholarship amounts. "Strong academics in a faith-filled community" rarely gets cited.

Three

Completeness

Make who, what, cost, outcomes, and faith integration all answerable on one page. Incomplete answers send the AI to a school that finished the story.

Four

Consolidation

One authoritative page per topic. Tuition, each program, cost & aid. Scattered duplicates and PDFs create conflicting passages that the model can't reconcile.

Five

Freshness

Dated, current, and labeled for the right year. A 2025–26 scholarship table without a year label loses credibility the moment a family asks about 2026–27.

What does the data tell us?

It's not your size and it's not your CMS

The gap between the highest and lowest ranked Christian college is 51 points (90 vs 39), and it has surprisingly little to do with the things you'd expect. Size helps only at the margins: across all 166 colleges we could match to enrollment data, size explains under 10% of the difference in AI visibility. Larger colleges score a little higher on average, but plenty of small colleges outscore much bigger names. It isn't the website platform either. Whether a college runs a legacy CMS, an open-source platform, or a higher ed specialist system, the average score falls within the same C+/B- range. Your current system won't fix it on its own. AI visibility is earned in the content, and that's exactly what Squiz Content Intelligence is for.

The answers exist, but can AI read them?

For most colleges, the problem isn't missing information; it's information the machine can't see. Tuition is described in words, but the dollar figure is rendered in JavaScript. Scholarship amounts are locked inside an image. A "50+ programs" claim that's never actually listed. The colleges that lose the citation are the ones whose answers are trapped in PDFs, images, and scripts. Of the five signals, completeness scored lowest across all 169, and the most common gap is the simplest to fix: state the specific cost, scholarship figure, or outcome as plain text on the page.

Your distinctive is the one search you can own

When a family asks an AI for "Christian colleges that share our values," you hold an advantage a state university can't touch. 56% of these colleges already express their faith and mission clearly enough for an AI to cite it. It's their natural edge in this kind of search. But 37% have it flagged as a gap, leaving their single most differentiating asset in language that the machine skips over. The top-scoring colleges win because they do two things at once: they stay balanced across all five signals, and they make their distinctives specific and crawlable.
